How to choose a broadband deal

When broadband first arrived, it was relatively easy to find broadband providers – mainly because there were so few. Today however, there seem to be thousands of broadband deals, from hundreds of providers. So how do you find the one that’s best for you?

There are several considerations to make when you compare broadband providers. As well as the price and length of contract, you need to think about what method would suit you best. Quite often, you get the best deals by choosing broadband providers linked to products you already use. Mobile broadband, for instance, is an increasingly popular option for people whose main computer is a laptop, and can be tied into your mobile contract. Some mobile broadband providers offer pay-as-you-go options. This allows you the freedom of trying out the product with no obligation – though it can work out expensive.

If your landline phone or Satellite TV company is also a broadband provider, look carefully at the options on service bundles. By bundling two or three products together (phone + TV + broadband, for example) you can save a packet; not only on your broadband, but on your other services as well.

The speed of your connection will be important. Providers offer a range of fast broadband speeds – but fast can mean slow if you download a lot of media files such as movies. 10Mb should suffice to begin with.

Most broadband providers offer a range of usage tariffs. Unless you plan to be a very light user, always go for the unlimited option even if it costs more. The penalties for exceeding your limit can be enormous.
